Knorr-Bremse announces a Design Challenge for engineering students and practicing engineers
At Knorr-Bremse Budapest, we constantly search for solutions that support environmentally friendly railway transportation. This goal can be basically achieved by mass reduction and efficient structure utilization. The special brackets applied on trains for mounting purposes pose a special challenge due to the trade-off between strength and stiffness on one hand and weight on the other.
The Challenge
Participants are invited to optimize a bracket. The goal of the optimization task is to minimize the weight of the part with mechanical strength and manufacturing requirements fulfilled. The submitted tender must include the optimized geometry and related documentation as detailed in the specification.
Participation
Ones can take part in the present challenge by filling in the registration form on this site. Participants must accept the legal notices regarding to the rules of the challenge and to data protection.
The detailed specification of the challenge is going to be sent to each participant via email after the acceptance of their registration.
Limitations of Participation
The employees of Knorr-Bremse Group, private persons having business relation with Knorr-Bremse Group and employees of legal entities having business relation with Knorr-Bremse Group, except the private persons employed via student/school unions in Knorr-Bremse Group, are disqualified from the present challenge.

The maximal attachment size is 15 MB.
Criteria for evaluation
- Mass reduction ratio (mass of new design / mass of original design)
- Maximal von Mises stresses in the evaluated load cases
- Manufacturability
- Overall design assessment of jury
The Awards
The top 5 lightest designs fulfilling the requirements will receive rewards as follows:
- 1st Prize – gross 300 000 HUF
- 2nd Prize – gross 250 000 HUF
- 3rd Prize – gross 200 000 HUF
- 4-5th Prize – gross 100 000 HUF each

Legal Conditions
By participation participant accepts that the property rights of the sent-in materials (optimized geometry, verification documentation) are going to be belong to Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems Budapest, therefore any usage/share/open up of the sent-in materials outside the scope of this challenge is prohibited.
Participants by participating in the Challenge states and guarantees that he/she uses only licensed or licence-free software to prepare the material and he/she has every right to participate, to make legally binding statements, to undertake obligations regarding the Challenge. Participants also guarantees that no third parties have any rights and/or demands to the material prepared for the Challenge which may obstruct the fulfillment of the Challenge’s conditions.
Participants undertake and accept to:
- hold in strict confidence any and all Proprietary Information and not disclose Proprietary Information to any third party;
- use Proprietary Information exclusively for the Challenge;
- not, without the prior written permission of a Knorr-Bremse Hungária Kft., use Proprietary Information for any purpose other than for the Challenge;
- not file any patent, utility model, design application or other intellectual property registration based upon or by way of disclosing any Proprietary Information.
In connection with the Challenge Proprietary Information shall mean every and all data, information and documentation which are become known to the participants and owned by Knorr-Bremse Group.
Provisions of Intellectual Property
Participant by participating in the Challenge acknowledges and accepts to give a usage right to each company within the Knorr-Bremse Group for a 15-year term regarding the prepared material. In case of the awarded materials the first 5 years out of 15-year term shall be an exclusive usage right for the same group of companies.
In the frame of said usage right every company within Knorr-Bremse Group is entitled to use the sent-in materials in its manufacturing process, develop, modify, copy and publish in marketing materials.
The award shall be considered as a counterprice of the above detailed usage right.
